Bernie Lunzer

President, The Newspaper Guild-CWA

Recently re-elected president of The Newspaper Guild-CWA, Bernie Lunzer has spearheaded alternative ownership efforts to preserve news organizations. The Guild has  partnered on employee stock ownership efforts along with cooperatives and nonprofits. Bernie has worked to get workers "inside the deal," including gaining seats on creditors committees in bankruptcy proceedings. The Guild continues to promote legislation and reform that would spur nonprofit status for news organizations, while maintaining quality journalism.

Lunzer is a graduate of The University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. He worked in all major departments of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, ending his employment in the newsroom. He served as the Minnesota Guild's executive officer before being elected in 1995 as secretary-treasurer of the international Guild. Lunzer was elected as Guild president in 2008.
