Daniel Sinker

Director of Knight-Mozilla OpenNews

Daniel Sinker is the director of Knight-Mozilla OpenNews, a joint program between the Knight Foundation and Mozilla that spreads open-Web innovation and development within journalism.

Before joining Mozilla, he was an assistant professor at Columbia College Chicago, where he focused on entrepreneurial journalism and the mobile Web. A writer, designer and programmer, Sinker is the author of the @MayorEmanuel Twitter feed. He is also the founder and developer of the local election tracker ChicagoMayoralScorecard.com and the mobile storytelling project CellStories.

In 1994, Sinker founded the influential underground culture magazine Punk Planet. He served as the publication's editor-in-chief until 2007. He is the editor of the book We Owe You Nothing: Punk Planet, the Collected Interviews, and the founder and editor of Punk Planet Books, an imprint of Akashic Books.

Sinker was a 2007-2008 John S. Knight Fellow at Stanford University, where he studied the impact of mobile technologies on traditional publishing models. He received his BFA in video production and new media from the School of the Art Institute.

Sinker is also a graphic designer. Entertainment Weekly named his cover for Joe Meno's Hairstyles of the Damned  one of the 25 “new classic” book covers of the last 25 years.

He lives in Chicago with his wife and son.
