Elena Nunez

Executive Director of Colorado Common Cause

Elena Nunez is the executive director of Colorado Common Cause, where she focuses on voting rights advocacy and campaign finance reform. She has long worked to reduce the influence of money in politics.

In 2002, Elena was the campaign manager for Amendment 27, Common Cause’s successful statewide campaign finance reform initiative. She joined Common Cause in 2006 and managed the effort to pass the voter-approved ethics law, which limits the influence of lobbyist money in state politics. In 2011, Elena served on the leadership team for the Boulder referendum calling for a constitutional amendment to reverse Citizens United.

In 2012, Elena led the effort to pass Amendment 65 in Colorado, a set of voter instructions to Colorado elected officials that also demanded a constitutional amendment to reverse Citizens UnitedThat same year, Elena headed the Just Vote! Colorado Election Protection campaign, the largest nonpartisan election-protection effort in Colorado history.

Before joining Colorado Common Cause, Elena was the transportation advocate for Environment Colorado, where she worked to build support for FasTracks, the successful ballot measure to expand light rail in the Denver metro area. After that campaign, Elena was the administrative director for CoPIRG and Environment Colorado, working on financial and communications projects. Originally from Arizona, Elena graduated from Columbia University with a degree in political science and gender studies.
