Jason Barnett

Co-Founder and Executive Director of TheUpTake.org

Jason Barnett is the co-founder and executive director of the UpTake, a national, nonprofit, online video newsgathering and broadcasting organization dedicated to transparency in democracy through truth in reporting. Based in Minneapolis, the Uptake was founded in 2007 to webcast live political events, cover community-based social justice movements, provide civic engagement and offer citizen journalist training to any who want it.

The UpTake won recognition for its coverage of the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, and of the months-long 2008-2009 recount and trial in the Norm Coleman/Al Franken U.S. Senate race. The UpTake has also watchdogged thousands of hours of the Minnesota Legislature, providing more live coverage than any other media outlet, including public television stations. The UpTake has won three coveted Page One Awards from the Minnesota chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and in 2008 was recognized as a Top 10 website by the Center for Public Integrity.

A longtime professional sculptor, Barnett lives in St. Paul with his spouse and two children.
