Matt Howard

Communications Coordinator for Iraq Veterans Against the War

Matt Howard served in the Marine Corps from 2001–2006 as a helicopter mechanic and completed two tours in Iraq. His experience guarding Iraqi "friendlies" on a Forward Operating Base near Fallujah and their subsequent treatment by the military dramatically changed his views about the wars in the Middle East and American foreign policy.

After exiting the Marines, Howard attended school, worked and helped reboot the Bay Area chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW). He later responded with fellow IVAW members to Scott Olsen's injury at the hands of the Oakland Police Department in 2011. The experience following Scott's injury helped Howard realize the importance of telling the story of IVAW's work and the experiences of his fellow veterans. Howard now works as the communications coordinator for IVAW in New York City.
