Allison Butler

Media Educator and Lecturer in the UMass Amherst Department of Communication

Allison Butler is a lecturer in the department of communication at UMass Amherst and a steering committee member and co-chair of the curriculum committee of the Massachusetts Media Literacy Consortium. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on various aspects of media criticism, including media violence, media literacy and media and education. She also works with homeschool, alternative school and public school students.

Butler holds an M.A. and PhD from New York University, where her research focused on media literacy, youth and identity development. She worked for the New York City public school system, developing and integrating a media literacy curriculum in a small, media-themed high school. She is the author of several articles and two books on integrating media literacy into the curriculum: Media Literacy Goes to School and Majoring in Change.
