Hakim Bellamy

Albuquerque Poet Laureate

Albuquerque’s inaugural poet laureate, Hakim Bellamy is a national and regional poetry slam champion who held three consecutive collegiate poetry slam titles at the University of New Mexico. His poetry has been displayed on inner-city buses in Albuquerque and published in various anthologies. Bellamy received an honorable mention for the University of New Mexico’s Paul Bartlett Re Peace Prize for his work as a community organizer and journalist, and Local iQ and Alibi recently named him “best poet.” He is the co-creator of the multimedia hip-hop theater production Urban Verbs: Hip-Hop Conservatory & Theater, which has been staged throughout the country.

Bellamy facilitates youth writing workshops for schools and community organizations in New Mexico and beyond. He is currently finishing his master’s degree in the University of New Mexico’s communications and journalism department. He is the proud father of a 4-year-old miracle, and is the founder/CEO of Beyond Poetry LLC, a one-stop shop at the intersection of art and civic engagement.
