Your Click Counts: Action After NCMR

More than 2,500 people showed up in Boston a few weeks ago for the National Conference for Media Reform, and many more tuned in online. Now it’s time to keep showing up.
One of the first things you can do is sign the “Change the Media, Change the World” petition to Congress and the Federal Communications Commission. The NCMR community extends beyond the people who attended it in person – it includes you and your friends and neighbors. Sign the petition to help us keep building a people-powered movement to:
- Protect the Future of the Internet
- Promote Quality Journalism and Diverse Media Ownership
- Build World-Class Public Media
Think that petitions don’t have any weight in Washington? Rep. Ed Markey told the NCMR crowd that they do:
Congress is a stimulus-response institution. There’s nothing more stimulating for a member of Congress than a deluge of digital feedback from the Netroots. You have the power to put congressmen on notice that their votes can have consequences for their job security. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise – Congress cares when you click.
And Free Press President Craig Aaron talked about the power of the grassroots:
You see the people in power… they want you to believe that you don’t matter.
They want you to think that all those petitions you signed don’t matter. I can’t tell you how many times some staffer has called me to say. ‘You know, all these petitions you’re sending over here don’t really make a difference.’
And I’m like: Well, you never called me when we didn’t send petitions – so there’s the difference.
They’ll try to tell you your blog doesn’t matter – but that’s because they want you to stop writing about them.
They’ll try to tell you showing up to testify doesn’t matter – but that’s because they are afraid more people are going to start paying attention to what they’re doing.
They’ll tell that taking the streets doesn’t matter. But I saw 100 people show up in the streets of Mountain View, California last summer – not exactly a hot protest spot – and shame a company like Google into abandoning a dangerous pact with Verizon.
That was 100 people. I just saw 100,000 people on the streets of Madison, Wisconsin – right where we held the first NCMR 8 years ago. So let’s not forget what we’re capable of doing
Still they will try to tell you a compromise on a compromise on a compromise on a capitulation is 'the best you can get.'
Don’t believe it: They’re just hoping you won’t show up.
We do have power. NCMR was just the beginning. We’ll be
working hard this summer to protect free speech online, protect public media
and spread the word about the exciting opportunities for communities to get
their own radio stations. But we can’t do it alone.
So stay engaged, stay tuned, and keep showing up.
